Myeza to master new position
RPC Astrapak welcomes Zakhele Myeza to the Group as the new General Manager of JJ Precision in Westmead. Myeza has been part of the team since the beginning of June.
Having cut his teeth in his career in the steel industry, Myeza embarked on preparing for his Master’s Degree, where his project was to be based on steel manufacturing. He then moved to flexible packaging before settling in Injection Moulding, and changed the focus of his thesis accordingly, which resulted in the beginning of a long road to attaining his post graduate degree whilst balancing work commitments with conducting research.
He spent four years researching his thesis titled “The Effects of Waste Management on Profitability in a Flexible Packaging Company”. Although defined for the flexible packaging industry, Myeza says that the principle is applicable to many industries.
“All companies have a similar production model. The main output is focused on production, and we forget to look at the waste within the system when manufacturing the product. How does this affect my profitability in production terms? I look at each job, assess the expected GC, look at waste within the system, and ask if it is really making money? There is a continuous need to control your inputs in order to predict your outputs.”
In his new role as RPC Astrapak JJ Precision General Manager, Myeza will apply much of his research, which will help drive the plant to where it needs to be positioned in the marketplace. “It is crucial that we deliver on Consistent Predictable Quality. I’ve embarked on a three-phase approach whereby meeting with the staff and sharing the road map of what needs to be achieved has been completed and our team at JJ Precision shares this vision. We are now in the initial implementation phase in pilot areas and then finally, full implementations across all the products.”
Myeza has already assessed that the team at RPC Astrapak JJ Precision is a close-knit family, and as he goes about understanding the dynamics of his team he is set to become a more integral part of that family. Being part of a team is not a foreign concept for Myeza, who is a big rugby fan and plays the game at his club, College Rovers, where he gets into the thick of things in the hooker position in the front row. This extra mural activity ensures he is always up for challenge.
When asked about the road ahead, Myeza explains that on the work front, RPC Astrapak Group and the JJ Precision plant are moving in the same direction that he enjoys. “Data is available and the systems are in place, what we require is constant interrogation of this data for use in the continuous improvement projects that we can implement from analysing the data. That is where the excitement lies for me. The numbers drive actions,” he said.
A little further down the road, Myeza is considering doing an MBA and then perhaps even pursuing a doctorate.
Other than rugby and when time allows, Myeza also enjoys playing indoor soccer and dabbles on the golf course every now and then.
RPC Astrapak is delighted to have someone of Myeza’s experience and passion on the team and believe that he will add great value in the years to come.
